The Addicks players seemed in subdued mood as they alighted from the coach at Glanford Park. Youngster, Adebayo Azeez, was part of the 19 man squad following Leon Clarke’s departure on Friday.
Azeez, along with ex-Scunthorpe player, Andy Hughes, and Cedric Evina were the unlucky players who were not involved in the match.
Powell brought Scott Wagstaff in on the right, with Darel Russell replacing Dale Stephens in the middle. The move was designed to give Charlton a more solid look and the manager’s post match comment that his team were ‘back on track’ suggested that not losing, rather than winning, was the priority.
Charlton went in front after just six minutes. A move down the right saw Scott Wagstaff deliver a great cross that Bradley Wright-Phillips swept home.
The Addicks had their hosts on the rack and it seemed just a matter of time before they increased their lead.
However, the game was turned on its head midway through the half. A ball was played in from the right, which Hamer called for. Michael Morrison took responsibility, but instead of clearing his lines, he tried to find Rhoys Wiggins. Garry Thompson intercepted, drove in along the byeline and was sent tumbling from behind by Wiggins.
Jon Parkin sent Hamer the wrong way and rolled his spot-kick to the keeper’s left.
The goal saw Scunthorpe assume the ascendancy which Charlton rarely wrested back. After a couple of shaky performances, Ben Hamer was the Addicks saviour and made several fine stops to keep his team on terms.
Charlton only created one other serious chance but Scott Wagstaff miskicked from close in. The Addicks lost Johnnie Jackson, to what looked like a hamstring injury, five minutes from time.
In the end, the Addicks were pleased to escape with a point, but the afternoon had promised so much more.
